Note: The sweater pictured is not what the pattern looks like now. I made a few changes which you can see in the following pictures!
Good morning all! I have another FREE pattern for you! I have a few new nephews coming soon and I've been trying to decide what to make. My sister-in-law is married to a man in the Navy, and the idea popped in to my head to make a beanie with an anchor on it. And what goes better with a baby beanie than a matching sweater? I wanted to be able to design this one myself, so I spent a couple long days creating what is now named "the Newton sweater". As of now, I only have it in size 0-3 months, and you can purchase the pattern here.
**As of January 18th, 2015, I also have a sweater for sale in my Etsy shop**
The hat I wanted to share with you because it is just so cute! And easy!
stitches used....
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
sl st - slip stitch
materials needed....
H and D hook
#4 medium weight yarn, I used Hobby Lobby's I love this yarn (so soft and cozy!)
yarn needle
scissors
To make the hat.... [newborn]
Take your H hook and start with a magic circle. If you do not know how, there are youtube videos available to show you, or here are some step by step photos I took of me making one.
If you are more comfortable with the "chain 4 and join in first chain with a slip stitch" method , that's perfectly fine too.
Round 1: (Denim blue) Chain 1 (never counts as first stitch), 10hdc into circle; join in first hdc with sl st. [10sts]
round 2: Chain 1, *2hdc in st* repeat around; join in first hdc with sl st, change color. [20sts]
For an almost invisible color change, follow these instructions
On the round before changing colors, finish the pattern up until joining. Hold the yarn in front of work (will be inside of hat, opposite side will be the invisible side), place hook like you are going to do a sl st. Take the next color yarn and pull through hdc, and loop on hook. Pull strings tight to connect stitching. Then you continue the pattern.
Round 3: (white) Chain 1, *2hdc in st, hdc in the next st* repeat around until end; join in first hdc with sl st. [30sts]
Round 4: Chain 1, *2hdc in st, hdc in next 2sts* repeat around until end; join in first hdc with sl st, change color. [40sts]
Round 5: (denim blue) Chain 1, *2hdc in st, hdc in next 3sts* repeat around until end; join in first hdc with sl st. [50sts]
Round 6: Chain 1, hdc in every hdc around; join in first hdc with sl st, change color. [50sts]
Round 7: (white) Chain 1, hdc in every hdc around; join in first hdc with sl st. [50sts]
Round 8: Chain 1, hdc in every hdc around; join in first hdc with sl st, change color. [50sts]
Round 8: Chain 1, hdc in every hdc around; join in first hdc with sl st, change color. [50sts]
Round 9: (denim blue) Chain 1, hdc in every hdc around; join in first hdc with sl st. [50sts]
Round 10: Chain 1, hdc in every hdc around; join in first hdc with sl st, change color. [50sts]
Round 11: (white) Chain 1, hdc in every hdc around; join in first hdc with sl st. [50sts]
Round 12: Chain 1, hdc in every hdc around; join in first hdc with sl st, change color. [50sts]
Round 13-17: (denim blue) chain 1, sc in ever hdc around; join with sl st into first sc. At the end of the last round, join like normal, then tie off and cut yarn.
1st piece
Take your D hook. The first piece will be the one you want to sew on first.
Start by make a magic circle with some red yarn (or whichever color you like). Chain 1, and crochet 8sc into the loop; join with a sl st into first sc.
ch13. sl st into 2nd chain from hook and in each 11ch after. Join with a sl st into sc in the original circle. Tie off yarn and cut.
Weave in ends, and you have your hat!
Now to make the anchor. This in made in 3 separate pieces, then you sew them each on.
2nd piece (smaller piece for upper anchor)
ch9. sl st into 2nd chain from hook and in each 7ch after. Tie off yarn and cut.
3rd piece (bottom of anchor)
ch15. sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each 13ch after. Tie off yarn and cut.
Sew on your pieces and enjoy!!!!
